Inktense blocks, pencils, brushes and journal

Derwent Inktense Blocks, Pencils, Water brushes and Strathmore Journal

You just bring yourself and a small suitcase of clothes, etc.

This means that someone (two someones) has been having fun talking with the instructors and shopping for art supplies. You know the old saying – someone has to do it!

It’s part of what we do so that the Art Camp experience of preparing and getting yourself here is as relaxing and worry free as we can make it.

Bernina Fleet

Written by on May 19, 2012 in About Camp, Art Camp for Women, Fiber Arts with 0 Comments

You might wonder what we do during the winter months between camps…this year we had a lot of fun (and some anxiety) purchasing a fleet of sweet, sturdy workhorse Bernina sewing machines for camp.  While we don’t do A LOT of sewing at camp, we frequently have projects with some sewing.  It was time for Lorri’s Bernina to stay home and for Camp to have it’s own sewing machines.

"Esther" in honor of Lorri F's grandmother-in-law and our first purchase

It all started with a once-in-a-lifetime find of a Bernina at the Hospice thrift store.  As Lorri F was checking out the machine to make sure it worked, she was fielding comments left and right from other women shoppers who wanted the machine if she didn’t…fortunately, everyone kept their cool and we didn’t need to call crowd control!  The next stop for our Bernina was Steve’s Sewing Machine Service in Loveland, Colorado where it received a tune up and a clean bill of health.

Art Journal Covers – Keep an Art Journal

Aacckkk! Just too much to do once we get warm spring sunshine – sitting inside with the blog is just not going to happen in the daylight. Today we are having our third rainy day in a row so I may get caught up!

I am testing and practicing making sample covers for  Art Camp for Women. See below for previews!

Stenciled bird cover

Stenciled and Collaged Art Journal Cover

This cover uses a Julie Fei-Fan Balzer stencil, Pan Pastels, and a collaged bird all sealed with gloss gel medium.

AJ cover JFFB chevron

Stenciled and Sculpted

First I put down a layer of gesso, then stenciled with modeling paste. I used a stencil by Julie Fei-Fan Balzer from The Crafter’s Workshop, colored with Pan Pastels. I then tried some sculpting with an old credit card for more texture to the left. Then sealed it all carefully with gloss gel medium.

Alumni – Lou Ann Haines – October 2011

Written by on May 12, 2012 in Art Camp Alumni Awards, Art Camp for Women with 0 Comments

When Lou came to Art Camp for Women last fall, she was on the way to her first ‘big’ art demonstration/teaching gig. Here is our interview in its entirety as she answered so graciously, articulately AND with humor to my semi-awkward questions.

1) Name:Lou Haines

Lou's Art at Camp

Lou's Art - in the middle of it!

2) When did you attend Art Camp for Women? October 2011

3) What had you choose Art Camp for Women – there are many to choose from.

LH: Honestly, I’m not sure.  It was my first “camp” and I really didn’t know what I should expect.  So, I looked around on the internet and found you.  The real draw (in the beginning) was the artist, Alisa Burke.  When I found out that she was going to be unable to attend and that Kelli Nina Perkins would fill in for her, then I was sure I wanted to come!  Besides, I thought Colorado was far enough from Ohio that it would really seem like a vacation!

The joys of being with other creative people (and why we need to push ourselves to get out and mingle!)

My art group "Uncommon Cloth"

My art group "Uncommon Cloth" (Lorri F third from left)

Why do I have to force myself to get out, mingle and feed my creative side??  I belong to a small art group and to a much larger contemporary art quilt group and every month I have to give myself an extra nudge to go to our meetings.  It’s a common theme in my life and by the time I work and run errands for our household, I’d rather stay home and slip down to my art room if I have a few moments (and some energy) left in the day.    It’s just easier to stay home!  However, when I  “stay home” too long, I find myself feeling stale; out of ideas and inspiration.
