Flower Art Tutorial by Liesel Lund

This tutorial shows you how to take a pencil line drawing through different stages. You don’t need to do all of them. I wanted to show a variety of treatments you can do.

1. It is always best to use your own photos for reference material. Here is a close-up of a buttercup flower I took. Buttercup photo

2. With a lead pencil I drew a rough outline of the subject.

3. Added shading, keeping it loose and scribbly.

4. Used a tortillion to smudge the lead and create more shadows. A tortillion is a pencil shaped tool made of compressed paper. It comes in different sizes. If you like drawing with lead pencil-I recommend trying one-they are really fun to use to pull out subtle shadings and shadows. Tutorial picture #4

Spotlighted Artist – Liesel Lund – Art Camp for Women

Written by on February 28, 2013 in About Camp, Art Camp for Women, Spotlighted Artist with 1 Comment

We at Art Camp for Women are going to be trying on something new for 2013. We are going to use our blog to Spotlight the Artists. We are going to be inviting as many mixed-media artists as we can to join us in sharing their art, art processes and lives on our blog.

To begin we are spotlighting Liesel Lund of Seattle, Washington. We found Liesel when Lori W. took a class from her in late 2011 and gleefully announced she had finally found THE altered book artist/teacher she had been looking for. Liesel will be teaching everyone how to make altered book journals at our June 2013 Art Camp for Women as well as being our Spotlighted Artist this time around. Please join us in welcoming Liesel and follow along with us over the next couple of weeks to get to know her.

Written by on February 27, 2013 in Art Journaling, Classes, keepanartjournal with 2 Comments

In January I started an online course with Kelly Kilmer called Marvel Your Precious Life. It includes 30 lessons to be done in 30 days…we are now approaching March and I am on Lesson 6! Makes me laugh!

Class 1 Bird Stamp Focals

Class 1 - Bird Stamp Focals

However when I do get a few minutes I LOVE doing my art journaling using this class. For the above two page spread I was trying out several different lettering styles in addition to the writing prompt.

Class #2 Bold Color

Class #2 Bold Color

I had so much fun with class number 2. In addition to the class prompts I was pushing myself to use colors I don’t normally use i.e. pink, along with my favorite colors – green and orange!

President’s Day – Almost as Exciting as Ground Hog’s Day

Everyone at our house either has a cold or is recovering from a cold. So we had a very low-key 4-day weekend.  Boredom is a great motivator for me and after about a million shrieky-kid-cartoons I beat it down to do more work in my studio. Not art – work. In case you have missed it – I have been moving my upstairs office to my downstairs studio – renovations were required. And lots of unanticipated work! Meanwhile life continued.

Worktable-dry end

I attacked the last large pile of debris left from the renovation project. My art table. Today it is ready for action with my three current projects well on their way!

A-Tangle-a-Day| Keep an Art Journal

Written by on February 12, 2013 in Art Journaling, Cool Products with 6 Comments

Early in January I posted about my fun new calendar the “tangle-a-day” a calendar for Zentangle practice, designed by Carole Ohl.

Jan 7 w-color

The colors were just sitting there and the next thing ya know - they're on my tangle...

I only missed 4 days completely in January – that is some kind of indication how much waiting I did this month. Well waiting or watching programs with kids that didn’t exactly keep me riveted.

Jan12-TombowEgg

And then I got out my black Tombow pen...

Sometimes I went back and filled in a day I had missed when I was waiting for a looong time. Like this day (12th) I’m pretty sure that was later like it says around the 25th. The delicious shading is using the Tombow pen then running my water brush along the edge of the ink.
